Stockport Homes Case Study

Stockport Homes 8 Case Study

Stockport Homes

When Stockport Homes decided to refurbish their offices, the brief was clear: create a space that feels calm, welcoming, and genuinely supportive of staff wellbeing. After several years of rapid growth, the organisation had outgrown a purely functional, desk-first environment and wanted a workplace that reflected its values, culture, and people-focused mission.
The Green Office Solutions was brought in to design and install a biophilic scheme that would do more than simply “add some plants”. The goal was to support focus, reduce stress, and create a workplace that staff were proud to spend time in.

The challenge

Stockport Homes’ main office had a familiar set of problems:

  • High traffic areas that felt busy and noisy
  • Open plan spaces that lacked warmth and visual variety
  • Meeting rooms that were practical, but not particularly inspiring
  • Limited natural views and pockets of artificial light that felt harsh by mid-afternoon

Staff surveys had highlighted a desire for more calm, more greenery, and more “breathing space” in the working day. Leadership also recognised that hybrid working had changed expectations. If you want people to choose the office, it has to offer something different to a kitchen table at home.

The challenge was to introduce nature in a way that felt intentional rather than decorative, and to do it with a solution that was easy to maintain over the long term.

The approach

The Green Office Solutions started with a simple principle: design from the human point of view first.
Rather than thinking in terms of “a plant here, a planter there”, the team mapped how people moved through the space, where they paused, where they worked deeply, and where they collaborated. From there, we developed a biophilic plan built around three themes.

1. Arrival and first impressions
The ground floor reception was transformed from a functional pass-through into a welcoming, plant-rich arrival space. Tall planters with layered foliage soften the edges of the waiting area, while a statement feature of mixed-height planting helps to frame the reception desk without blocking lines of sight.
This does more than look good. It signals, from the moment someone walks in, that this is a place that cares about people and the environment they work in.

2. Focus-friendly work zones
In the open plan areas, planting was used to subtly define zones without building more walls. Mid-height planters were positioned between banks of desks to:

  • Reduce visual distractions
  • Help with acoustic absorption
  • Break up long sightlines that can make open spaces feel overwhelming

Species were chosen carefully for low light and all-day performance, with a mix of textures and leaf shapes that feel calming rather than cluttered. Staff do not just see green in their peripheral vision. They experience a softer, more natural rhythm across the floor.

3. Meeting spaces that feel more human
Formal and informal meeting rooms had already been fitted with good technology. What they lacked was warmth. The Green Office Solutions introduced:

  • Wall-mounted planting and pockets of greenery in corners
  • Tabletop planters to add softness around screens and cables
  • A consistent palette of natural tones and planting across floors

This combination shifts the mood. Conversations feel less clinical, and longer workshops are more comfortable. Teams describe the rooms as “places you can actually think”.

Wellbeing at the heart

The benefits of biophilic design are well documented, from reduced stress and eye strain to improved mood and concentration. For Stockport Homes, wellbeing was not a buzzword. It was a core part of the brief.

Key wellbeing outcomes included:

  • A calmer, quieter feel
Staff reported that the space feels less “echoey” and more settled, particularly in busy periods. Planting has helped diffuse sound and soften the hard edges of an open office.
  • Visual relief from screens
Having natural greenery in direct and peripheral view gives the eye a healthier focal point than another screen or bare wall. It supports micro-breaks without having to leave the desk.
  • A sense of care and pride
When an organisation invests in its environment, it sends a message. Staff have commented that the office “finally feels finished” and that the planting has made the space feel more cared for and more professional.

Practicality and maintenance

A common concern with biophilic schemes is ongoing maintenance. Green Office Solutions designed the installation to be sustainable in every sense.

  • Plant species were selected for durability, air quality benefits, and suitability to the available light.
  • Planters were specified with integrated reservoirs to extend watering cycles.
  • A tailored maintenance schedule was put in place so facilities teams are not carrying the burden alone.

The result is a living environment that looks as good on a Tuesday afternoon in February as it does on launch day.

The impact

Within the first few months, Stockport Homes reported:

  • Positive feedback from staff about the look and feel of the offices
  • Improved first impressions from visitors, partners, and new starters
  • Higher occupancy on typical “quiet” days, as hybrid staff choose the office more often

One team member summed it up simply:
“It feels like somewhere you want to come in to, not somewhere you have to.”

Conclusion

This project was never about filling corners with greenery. It was about using biophilic design to support the people who keep Stockport Homes running every day.

By combining thoughtful zoning, carefully chosen planting, and a strong focus on wellbeing, The Green Office Solutions helped transform a standard office into a calmer, healthier, and more engaging place to work.

The space now works harder for the organisation and feels better for the people who use it. And that is the real power of biophilia in the modern workplace.
