Africell Bishopsgate

Adding Greenery To Bishopsgate 4

Bishopsgate is one of London’s most dynamic business districts, a place where modern architecture meets the constant movement of city life. The client wanted planting that would complement the sharp lines of the building while adding a softer, more welcoming dimension to the space. The challenge was to create something that felt professional, durable, and distinctive – greenery that could hold its own in a high-profile urban environment without demanding constant upkeep.

The Design Concept

We developed a planting scheme that played with contrast. The sleek, understated forms of Rotterdam planters in matt white were paired with the striking verticals of Sansevieria Zeylanica. This combination created a clean, architectural look that echoes the precision and order of the surrounding environment.

To add depth and balance, we introduced Gillard stone planters, whose rugged, textural finish offers a natural counterpoint to the crisp white of the Rotterdam pieces. Into these we placed Strelitzia Nicolai, a bold, broad-leaved plant chosen for its sculptural presence and sense of movement. The interplay between the planters and the planting created a dialogue between strength and softness, minimalism and natural drama.

Plant a Ponic in Action

A vital part of the scheme was the use of the Plant a Ponic system. This innovative approach to planting ensures that maintenance is simplified and sustainability is built in from the start. By reducing water waste and keeping plants healthier for longer, Plant a Ponic allows businesses to enjoy vibrant greenery without the hidden costs of constant attention. For a fast-paced corporate setting like Bishopsgate, it was the perfect solution.

The Result

The final installation has reshaped the atmosphere of the space. What was once a stark, functional environment now feels more human, more engaging, and more alive. Staff have responded positively, noting that the greenery provides a calming backdrop to a busy working day. Visitors are welcomed by planting that feels both sophisticated and intentional, setting the tone for the business inside.

The scheme demonstrates how the right combination of design, material, and planting system can deliver more than just decoration. At Bishopsgate, the result is an environment that reflects professionalism while offering the restorative qualities of nature. It shows that even in the heart of London, where glass and concrete dominate, greenery can find its place and transform the feel of a workplace.
